SHO frees liquor smuggler on ex-minister's call | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 27: A Station House Officer (SHO) posted in Jammu-Kathua-Samba Range has let off a liquor smuggler after he received a request in this regard from none other than a former minister. Sources informed Early Times that even though the SHO wasted no time in releasing the bootlegger along with the seized illicit liquor following the recommendation of the former minister, he didn't forget to collect Rs 35,000 in cash from the apprehended person. "The SHO struck the deal to release the bootlegger in the police station itself, but the amount agreed in the negotiations was taken outside by one of the 'blue eyed' staff members of the SHO. The bootlegger was released as soon as the SHO's favourite staff member called up. No case was registered against the person nabbed with the consignment of illicit liquor," said sources. Sources said that the SHO apprehended the liquor smuggler following a surprise raid in a village falling under the jurisdictional area of his police station. The police recovered pouches of illicit liquor from the possession of the nabbed bootlegger. "The liquor smuggler was then brought to the police station. Sooner than later series of recommendations to bail out the smuggler started to pour in the police station. Within no minutes, a phone call recommending release of the apprehended person was also made by a former minister," said sources. "After making the call, the former minister then sent one of his close associates to the police station. The former minister's emissary in order to secure the release of the liquor smuggler then initiated the negotiations, which lasted till late night. Initially, the SHO was a bit reluctant to release the apprehended person but later on he relented," sources added. Sources further said that after the discussion between the SHO and former minister's man got over, the SHO's blue eyed staff member and the former minister's representative sat in a car outside the police station following which the liquor smuggler was released along with the consignment of the illicit liquor seized during the raid without registering any case in this regard. "If the illegal release of the liquor smuggler was not enough, the SHO surpassed all his limits when he told the smuggler that he can carry out his smuggling activities in the area without any inhibition while the rest would be taken care of by him," said sources. "However, the SHO cautioned the liquor smuggler that the smuggling activities to be executed by him should not be on a large scale rather the modus operandi should be such that no one can take notice of it," sources added. Sources said that finally the liquor smuggler also agreed to give a fixed monthly installment of cash payment to the SHO for ensuring a smooth and safe passage to carry out his illegal trade. |
