Presiding officer suspended in Bandipora; Kupwara records highest turnout in north Kashmir | ULB elections phase-I | | S Tahir-ul Haq
Early Times Report BARAMULLA, Oct 8: Amid complete shutdown and heightened security arrangements in the valley, the north Kashmir towns saw mixed responses, and Kupwara district recorded highest turnout in first phase of ULB elections Meanwhile, a Presiding officer was suspended for violating the norms in Bandipora. Unprecedented security arrangements were placed in all major parts of north Kashmir's Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora districts to ensure peaceful polls, but 1325 votes were casted out of 26149 with the Percentage of 5.11% in the first phase of Baramulla municipal polls. It is learnt that a total of 41 candidates contested in the 21 municipal wards in the Baramulla town; among 21 wards 6 were declared uncontested, while as 35 candidates contested on 15 wards. In Baramulla 1054 (3.7 percent), Kupwara, 1350 (26. 3 percent), and in Bandipora 410 (2.5 %), were polled. Pertinently, Reyaz Ahmad Mir, brother of senior PDP leader and MP Fayaz Ahmad Mir is contesting from ward number 11 in Kupwara. The overall polling percentage across the State in the 1st phase of Municipal Polls-2018 has been recorded 56.7 percent. The internet speed was reduced to avoid any law and order situations in north Kashmir, but overall the day remained peaceful. Meanwhile sources also said that a presiding officer was suspended on Monday for allowing women to accompany a voter up to voting compartment in Kaloosa area of north Kashmir's Bandipora district during the ongoing municipal elections. Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Shahid Iqbal said that the concerned presiding officer has been suspended and polling officer 1 at higher secondary school Kaloosa was appointed as presiding officer of the concerned polling station, said sources. They said that the presiding officer was suspended for violating the norms. A woman was injured after being hit with pellets in clashes that erupted in Bandipora between protesters and police on Monday. Sources said that, a lady namely Shabeena Wife of Javid Ahmad Dar was injured after she was hit by pellets when clashes erupted in Lankreshipora village of Bandipora, the youth attacked a police vehicle with stones. There were some minor clashes but nothing happened with the polling stations as they were smoothly conducted at Lankreshipora, polling ward 8, sources told ET. Sources said that the clashes were also reported from Plan Bandipora near Govt Girls higher secondary school, after which the government forces used teargas shells to disperse the stone-throwing youth. |
