Srinagar-Leh highway again closed | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 21: Scores of vehicles were stranded at Zojila Pass as the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh National Highway, connecting ladakh region with the rest of the valley, was again closed due to slippery road conditions after reopening for few hours on Wednesday. We allowed the traffic on Srinagar-Leh highway this morning after remaining suspended for two days due to heavy snowfall and slippery road conditions, a traffic police official said. However, he said the road again became slippery this afternoon due to sub-zero temperature following which the highway was again closed for traffic. Scores of vehicle which were stranded at Zojila, were being guided to safer places, he said. The officials said the highway will soon be closed for winter months as the road conditions are not suitable for movement of traffic. We can't keep the highway open under such conditions so the road will soon be closed for winter months to avoid accidents, he added. On Tuesday, 250 stranded passengers and 82 vehicles which include 70 Trucks, four buses and 8 Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) were rescued to safety. The passengers and vehicles, mostly trucks, were stranded on the highway following heavy snowfall at Zojila. |
