Problem of solid waste needs to be addressed on war footing basis: HC | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Dec 19: : High Court today said that it was essential that the problem of solid waste management was addressed on war footing in the state including Pahalgam, the world famous tourist resort. The direction by a division bench of high court followed after the information with regard to preparation of Solid Waste Management by-laws provided by the state counsel M A Chashoo during the hearing of PIL regarding protection and preservation of tourist resort Pahalgam. The government was under strict direction from the court with regard to the formulation of Model Solid Waste Management by-laws in view of its extreme importance so that the solid waste in the entire state be managed and handled with model techniques. The government has to circulate these by-laws to all local bodies which include urban and rural for implementation. Keeping in view the topography of the state and the difficulties with regard to management of solid waste in the high altitude areas and upper reaches of the state, the court observed that it is essential that the problem of solid waste management is addressed on war footing. In its order on November 19, the Division Bench had noted that so far as Jammu and Kashmir was concerned, it has almost 78 local urban bodies while the number of local bodies in the rural areas would be perhaps more. "Given the size of the state and disparity in the availability of resources, there may not be uniformity in the consideration or the prescription by the different local bodies in the state," the court had said. |
