Jammu-Srinagar highway blocked due to landslide | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Dec 19: The Jammu-Srinagar national highway continues to remain shut, after a landslide sent stones hurling down the road on Wednesday, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded. No fresh traffic was allowed on the 270-km highway from both Srinagar and Jammu on Wednesday morning. The highway will now be reopened for public only after all the stranded vehicles are cleared and the situation near the landslide spot is reviewed. Though the civic authorities had removed the debris and reopened the road on Friday, the continuous falling of stones at the same spot over the last five days caused disruptions in the smooth movement of traffic. The stones continued to fall on the only all-weather road that links Kashmir with the rest of the country throughout Tuesday. Blocking the Jammu-bound traffic, the landslide further forced the closure of the highway for two days at Gangroo near Ramsu. As per a traffic department official, the stones had stopped falling on Tuesday afternoon, allowing the traffic department to green signal the stranded vehicles as reported. Traffic on the highway had been restricted to one-way over the past several months due to the construction of a four-lane project. Meanwhile, passenger vehicles have reportedly been cleared and the current focus is on moving the heavy vehicles. |
