Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 27: Morning walkers of Greenbelt Park Gandhi Nagar celebrated Republic day with patriotic fervor and zeal. A large number of morning walkers and residents of Greenbelt assembled to celebrate the function organized by morning walkers. The National flag was hoisted by I.C Jandial Retired Chief Engineer and S Inderjit Singh Sawhny (Industrialist). Earlier girls sang national folk songs in praise of Jawans and freedom fighters. Jandial in his address on the occasion threw light on the significance of the Republic Day. He said that the Constitution was adopted by the Indian Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949, and came into effect on 26 January 1950 with a democratic government system, completing the country's transition towards becoming an independent republic. Jandial read out the Preamble to the Constitution of India "WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens JUSTICE, social, economic and political; LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship; EQUALITY of status and of opportunity; and to promote among them all FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation; IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this 26th day of November, 1949, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION." Jandial explained that India achieved independence from British Raj on 15 August 1947 following the Indian independence movement noted for largely peaceful non-violent resistance and civil disobedience led by Mahatma Gandhi. He recalled the efforts of the Muslim Bureaucrat couple Badruddin Tayyabji and his wife Suraiya Begum who designed the national flag.
