Beyond 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' | Eve teasing continues in JK unabated | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad Early Times Report Srinagar, Jan 6: While police has been often claiming action against youth for creating nuisance in uptown areas, incidents of eve-teasing are on the rise in all parts of Jammu and Kashmir. A police official said that they received complaints from the residents that some youth had created nuisance in the area. "The Sanatnagar, Hyderpora, and Baghat Barazulla are hub of coaching centres and many youth have been indulging in eve teasing," the official said. Eve- teasing and street harassment incidents, despite being reported numerous times, remain constant problem in Jammu and Kashmir. Lewd remarks greet young girls on the roads, in public transport and outside their school, college and University campus. At times, molestation follows teasing. This gets reflected in high number of molestation cases registered with police. 1233 cases of molestation were reported in 2016. They got escalated to 1361 cases in 2017. "Very few eve teasing incidents are being reported. The victims are not coming forward to lodge the complaint. It is because of conservative and patriarchal society, girls do not come forward and speak up," the official added. Humaira (name changed) was walking down the road old city's Rainawari area. Narrating the incident, she said, "Two boys riding a motorbike slowed down near me, and started singing a Bollywood number with a sly grin." This is not an isolated incident, but an everyday experience for girls in the valley. Eve teasing is an everyday reality in Kashmir. In a similar case, a student of Women's College Maulana Azad Road was stopped by a group of bikers who taunted and giggled at her. It took her a week to get over the trauma and get back to college. Earlier, three youths were arrested for harassing a school girl in the Bhaderwah area of Doda district. The action was taken after a video went viral on social networking sites showing three youths stopping their bike on a roadside and one of them attempting to stop her by coming in front of her. The clip shows the girl falling down after losing control over the vehicle. An official of State Women Commission said they receive such cases frequently from across the Valley especially Srinagar. "We often receive complaints of stalking, passing lewd remarks and gestures, brushing against the woman's body and passing vulgar comments," the official said, wishing not to be quoted by name. "Majority of girls don't complain for fear of public humiliation. They prefer to suffer in silence than come out in the open, with the result the eve-teasers are encouraged," the official said. |
