Assembly elections in J&K could be delayed?
3/6/2019 11:19:17 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 6: J&K might not witness simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly polls. This is what a report from Kashmir suggests. It is none other than the president of Democratic Party Nationalist (DPN), Ghulam Hassan Mir, who has made a revelation that the possibility of simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly polls in J&K is remote, as the Governor of J&K, SP Malik, is not in favour of early assembly polls.
Only two days ago, Ghulam Hassan Mir, along with the NC, the PDP, the Congress, the CPI and other many party delegations, met the visiting team of Election Commission of India (ECI) in Srinagar. After attending the meeting held to ascertain the views of the political parties on the poll possibility in the state, Ghulam Hassan Mir claimed that J&K Governor didn't want to conduct assembly elections in the state anytime soon.
"There is a strong rumour that Governor Satya Pal Malik doesn't want to conduct Assembly elections in the state anytime soon," Mir was quoted as saying.
"I told the (visiting ECI) team categorically that they might get these inputs from the Governor's administration that conditions aren't conducive for Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir at the moment. I think such remarks are aimed at keeping the elected government at bay for some time in the state," Ghulam Hassan Mir was also quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, sources within the J&K BJP have revealed that "not many in the BJP want the assembly elections, along with Lok Sabha elections" and that "they were of the view that the BJP would win more assembly seats in case elections are held after Narendra Modi again takes over as the Prime Minister in May". "The people of Jammu province have not yet forgotten what the BJP ministers did to them. The peo0ple of Jammu continue to accuse the BJP ministers of letting down them and neglecting Jammu province. The BJP needs some more time to retrieve the lost political space as the memories of what the PDP government did to hurt the country and jeopardize the interests of the people of Jammu are too fresh to be forgotten," an informed source within the BJP 0n Wednesday revealed.
