| School Education Deptt turns grabber | | Illegally occupies building of public library for decades | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 6: Constructed years back inside the premises of Model Higher Secondary School R S Pura, the public library has been relegated to operate from a make shift arrangement while the building has illegally been occupied by the School Education Department.
Sources informed Early Times that the Public Library R S Pura was constructed under the Border Area Development programme in initial months of 1991 and after decades, the department of Library and Research had constructed its building in the premises of GHSS, Boys R S Pura but the building was in illegal possession of School Education Department.
"The library building was constructed inside the school so that the students would get the benefit of public library but just as the building was completed the school education department refused to handover it over to library department. As a result, the library continued to function from private building and rent worth lakhs is being paid to the owners annually", said sources while wishing anonymity; they added that the building block that was constructed for the library is being used as canteen by the department.
Sources further said that initially, the library was running from near the Mata Mandir Chowk, but it was shifted to another place due to leakage from the roof that caused damage to many books.
"The issue of illegal occupation of library building was raised by MLA Gagan Bhagat who called meeting of the concerned officers to resolve the matter, but the education department seems in no mood to vacate library building", said Ashwani Bhagat a student who raised the question of illegal occupation. |
