| Subversion of democracy in J&K; Omar Abdullah has forgotten 1951, 1987 | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 23: NC Vice-president Omar Abdullah is seething with anger. The reason is that he wanted simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections in J&K so that he could recapture the state government on his own strength or in alliance with the Congress, its age-old ally and also source of its strength, but the Government of India and the ECI dashed all his hopes to the ground by deferring the assembly elections. The ECI deferred assembly polls in the state for security reasons. It needed at least 70,000 security forces personnel to ensure free, fair and peaceful assembly polls, but the Union Government expressed its inability to station 70,000 additional security forces personnel across the state as the process to elect a new Lok Sabha is on.
That Omar Abdullah is extremely angry with the Union Government can be seen from what he tweeted the other day. He tweeted: "Midnight raids, crackdowns, rampant arrests, custodial murders, denial of democratic right to choose a government. Kashmir continues to suffer the fallout of the disastrous PDP-BJP alliance and from the Modi government's muscular approach to J&K".
It is obvious that Omar Abdullah ignored what the NC allegedly did from to time to subvert democracy or electoral practices in the state in general and Kashmir Valley in particular to retain control over the state power and rule unhindered. He forgot what Sheikh Abdullah did in October 1951.
The first elections to the J&K Legislative assembly were held on October 15, 1951. The NC won all the 75 seats, as many as 73 unopposed. It was a unique election in the electoral history of the country in the sense that the Sheikh regime allegedly rejected wholesale the nomination papers of the opposition candidates for no reason whatsoever to create an all-NC Assembly so that the NC could do whatever it wanted. The worst part was that the Indian Prime Minister JL Nehru gave his unstinted support to the Sheikh. The 1951 elections in J&K were not elections but Omar Abdullah would not talk about these fake elections because it would expose the NC and its undemocratic credentials and its insatiable lust for power.
And what about 1987 Assembly elections in the state in general and the Kashmir Valley in particular? Who doesn't know what the NC did to win the Assembly polls in Kashmir with the then Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi allegedly at the back and call of Farooq Abdullah. If one goes by the reports, the newly-founded Muslim United Front (MUF) was all set to win "between 25 and 30 assembly seats in Kashmir, but it could win only 4. These included Sopore, Home Shalibugh, Anantnag and Kulgam. It could happen only because the elections were rigged. The result was the rise of secessionism and formation of dreaded terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen by Syed Salahuddin, Yusuf Shah.
Many in Kashmir and outside have said again and again on record that "elections for J&K's Legislative Assembly have seldom been free and fair". The alleged wholesale rigging in the 1987 elections has been described as a "watershed moment in the Kashmir's tumultuous political history, as the then newly formed MUF felt disgruntled after most of its candidates were declared defeated".
Had the NC with the active support of the Congress not rigged the elections in 1987, the situation in the state today would have been somewhat different. But the NC would never recall what it did to fulfill its lust for power and pelf. |
