Ms Mehbooba, dialogue? Dialogue on what? | J&K is not Pakistan | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 12: On April 10, Pakistan PM Imran Khan made a ridiculous statement. He said: "He believes there may be a better chance of peace talks with India and settle Kashmir issue if PM Narendra Modi's party wins the general elections. Other parties would be afraid of right-wing backlash in case of settlement on the Kashmir issue. Kashmir is the central issue between the two countries". Imran Khan made this statement during an interaction with a small group of foreign journalists in Islamabad. As expected, his statement triggered a massive debate in New Delhi with some parties, including the Congress, accusing Imran Khan and PM Modi of working in tandem, and Kashmiri politicians like Mehbooba Mufti expressing the hope that PM Modi will seize the opportunity and start dialogue with Imran Khan to settle the so-called Kashmir issue. Of all the Kashmiri leaders Mehbooba Mufti, who became J&K CM by a quirk of history, was more vocal. She on Wednesday said that "like Pakistan premier Imran Khan, she too is hoping that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will start a dialogue with Islamabad if he gets re-elected. My father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was of the same view when he formed an alliance with the BJP in 2015 but Modi lost a golden opportunity by not making use of it to start a dialogue with Pakistan," she said while reacting to the statement of Imran Khan. Mehbooba Mufti obviously said that Pakistan is the main stakeholder even in this part of the state and gave everyone to understand that if peace was to return to Kashmir and South Asia, a settlement on J&K that satisfies Pakistan was a must. To be more precise, she pitched for a solution based on the nasty premise that J&K was a disputed territory or an unresolved issue between India and Pakistan and that J&K was an unfinished agenda of the partition. Mehbooba Mufti committed a grave wrong by saying what she said. J&K issue was settled way back on October 26, 1947, when Maharaja Hari Singh, the sole authority, merged his state with India under the Indian Independence Act of 1947. But more than that, J&K was not part of British India, which was to be divided to create Muslim Pakistan; J&K was one of the 560-odd princely states whose rulers alone had the authority to decide the fate of their respective states. Mehbooba wants PM Narendra Modi to hand over J&K to Pakistan just on the ground that it is a Muslim-majority region. It will never happen. No government in India could give even an inch of land to Pakistan and this can be seen from the fact that one of the election planks of all the political parties across the nation. And, then, Jammu and Ladakh, which constitute 89 per cent of the state's land area and house over 50 per cent of the state's population, are also there. The world knows what the people of Jammu and Ladakh stand for. The fact of the matter is that the desperate and defeated Mufti is just beating about the bush and raking up irrelevant issues. |
