Post poll: Newly floated parties go missing | | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad
Early Times Report Srinagar, June 2: All political activities have come to halt in Jammu and Kashmir since the conclusion of Lok Sabha elections as the newly floated parties have gone missing. Before elections, several political parties were created in the state in a bid to make some changes in the political system of the state. The representatives of these parties were either disgruntled leaders of the existing political parties or people, who claim to bring a change in the "corrupt system" of the state. However, all these parties are no more in sight since the poll results were announced. To become a recognised political party either at the state or national level, a party has to secure certain minimum percentage of polled valid votes or certain number of seats in the state legislative assembly or the Lok Sabha during the last election. However, the candidates of these parties did not make their presence felt in polls and also lost their security deposit in the parliamentary elections. There were 79 candidates in the electoral fray for Parliamentary constituencies of the state. The highest number of candidates were contesting from Jammu Lok Sabha constituency (24), followed by Anantnag (18), Srinagar and Udhampur (12) each, and Ladakh Lok Sabha constituency (4). However, 67 candidates could not even get the minimum required one-sixth (16.67 per cent) of the total polled votes, indicating 84 percent contestants lost their security deposit of Rs 25,000. "All the candidates of newly floated parties lost their security deposit," a source said. In Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency, 186832 votes were polled and minimum requirement to save the security deposit was 31138 votes. However, only two candidates, National Conference's Farooq Abdullah, and PDP's Aga Syed Mohsin secured more than 1/6 votes. From Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency, 18 candidates were in the fray where 124896 votes were polled. The minimum requirement to save the security deposit was 20816. Three candidates, NC's Justice Hasnian Masoodi, Congress leader G A Mir and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti secured 32.17, 26.83, and 24.44 percentage of votes respectively. Most of the candidates who lost their security deposit could not manage 700 votes. From Baramulla constituency, 455550 votes were polled where NC's Mohammad Akbar Lone who emerged as a winner bagged 133426 votes. Peoples Conference candidate Raja Aijaz and Independent candidate Er Rashid managed to save their security deposit by bagging 103193 and 102168 votes respectively. In Jammu Lok Sabha constituency, 1478795 votes were polled where 24 candidates were in the fray. Among them only BJP's Jugal Kishore, and Congress leader Raman Bhalla managed to save security deposit by securing 858066 and 555191 votes respectively. Similarly, candidates of the BJP and Congress Jitendra Singh and Vikramaditya bagged 724311 and 367059 respectively out of 1180123 votes polled in Udhampur. Rest all the candidates lost their security deposit. Interestingly among the 66 candidates who lost their security deposit, 39 candidates managed less votes than none of the above (NOTA) secured. |
