Munish Gupta continues mass contact programme | Rani Talab residents face water shortage, erratic electricity | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 9: With the rise in mercury, water shortage and erratic electricity are giving sleepless nights to residents of Rani Talab Digiana of Ward No. 45. Editor Early Times, Munish Gupta, during his mass contact programme at Rani Talab Digiana on Sunday met several people and informed them that he would be contesting forthcoming assembly elections as an Independent candidate from Gandhi Nagar constituency. "Unscheduled and prolonged power cuts coupled with irregular water supply by the Public Health Engineering department has compounded our problems in this peak summer season. The government should have, at least, made all arrangements before the onset of summer, but as usual the government is least bothered about the problems confronting the people," said Kailash, a housewife residing in lane No. 4 of Rani Talab. During his campaign, several elderly women met Munish Gupta and informed him that despite filling up form for Old Age Pension, no such benefit has been extended to them by the government. "We approached the concerned political leaders and requested them to get us Old Age Pension benefits. We filled up application forms with requisite formalities and submitted the same to the department concerned, but till date nothing has happened," said Surinder Kour (62) and Harnamo Devi (67). Both women are live in Digiana. A few residents also blamed the administration for not covering them in electoral rolls. "We have been living in this area for the last many years, but our family has not been entered in electoral rolls. Without voters' card we could not cast our votes in the recent Lok Sabha elections. There are three members in our family who have been kept out of electoral rolls," said Deepu Kumari, a resident of lane No. 2 of Digiana. At some places sanitation is the bigger issue as clogged and choked drains have created nuisance in the area. The slope of drain is not proper in some lanes due to which dirty water does not flow smoothly and overflows. With the result, water enters the lanes, causing huge inconvenience to the commuters. |
