Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Kamraj Aabid Nazir said the team constituted by the DFO carried out the drive on the instructions of Deputy Commissioner Kupwara Anshul Garg to remove encroachments from forest lands in the district. On Thursday, the forest department including Deputy Director Forest Protection Force Mohammad Sarwar and SDM Lolab Ahmed Hussain retrieved over 25 kanals of forest and state land during anti-encroachment drive in compartment number 19/20 in Sogam area of Lolab, he said. The staff of forest department faced stiff resistance, however, it succeeded in retrieving 300 kanals of forests land from the possession of encroachers, DFO told GNS, adding that the team dismantled boundary walls and removed brush wood fencing put up by encroachers. DFO directed the field staff to repair fencing in the locality so that encroachment attempts are prevented in future. "The department is taking all measures to prevent encroachment on forest land," Sarwar said. He warned people of strict action if they fail to remove encroachment from the forest land. Pertinently, a committee has been set up by the state government to demarcate the forest land and identify the land grabbers in the valley. |
