KATRA, Aug 29: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board organized 2-day Basketball, Archery, Shooting and Athletics tournaments at its Sports Complex here, as part of celebration of the National Sports Day. In all, 240 sportspersons drawn from Central University of Jammu, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, local sports clubs, various educational institutions and staff of the Shrine Board took part in these tournaments. Simrandeep Singh, Chief Executive Officer, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, who was the Chief Guest on the occasion, gave away prizes to the winners and runners up teams of Basketball as well as archers, shooters and athletes who were adjudged best in the tournaments. Before prize distribution, Mr. Simrandeep Singh paid floral tribute to hockey wizard, late Major Dhyan Chand, in whose honour National Sports Day is celebrated every year on 29th August. Earlier, the players were introduced to Simrandeep Singh before the commencement of the final sporting events. He urged the students to focus on sports alongside academics. Among those present on the occasion were Mr. Vivek Verma, Additional CEO of the Shrine Board; Dr. Jagdish Mehra, Dy. CEO; Dr. (Brig.) M. M. Harjai, Chief Administrative Officer, SMVDNSH, Kakryal; Mr. Shiv Kumar Sharma, President of the Indian Style J&K Wrestling Association; prominent citizens, sports lovers as well as officers and staff of the Shrine Board. Mr. Ashok Kumar, Director Sports, SMVDSB, in his welcome address, gave details of the sports activities being organized by the Shrine Board regularly as per an Annual Calendar. |
