Inaugurated in 2017, two subways at Satwari-Kunjwani stretch still not in use | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 16: Two subways inaugurated by former MLA Gandhi Nagar and Member Parliamentarian with fanfare in September, 2017 but ironically after lapse of two years, these two pedestrian subways are still not in use. It is pertinent to mention here that however, these four pedestrian subways were announced with the widening road project of Satwari-Kunjwani in 2011 and announced that each subway would be constructed at busy places like Kunjwani, Gangyal, Digaiana and Satwari chowk but ironically only two were constructed with estimated cost of 2.5 Crores under Centre Road Fund (CRF) but unfortunately two subways out of four which were constructed in 2017 are still not in use or closed for pedestrians. "However, the construction of these subways was allotted to Public Works Department (R&B) and has been completed by executing agency in seven year tenure from the date of announcement but purpose is defeating day by day as both the constructed pedestrian subways are still not in use", said sources in R&B department. Sources further said that during the inauguration of these subways, the former MLA and Speaker Legislative Assembly had announced that new subways would prevent accidents as these areas are considered to be prone to accidents due to movement of heavy traffic and would be beneficial for general public as they can easily go through underpass but all these claims were not materialised so far as these pedestrian subways are still not open through for general public so far. A local shopkeeper of Digiana said that despite announcement of four subways announced at that stretch but constructed only two that too still not open for public. "However, in the DPR of widening project that two subways one at Kunjwani and other at Satwari Chowk are must be needed and should be constructed as soon as possible due to heavy movement can be witnessed at both the junctions but the executive agency first constructed those subways where is less traffic movement if we compare with Satwari-Kunjwani Chowk", said another shopkeeper. |
