Farooq’s detention atrocious, unbelievable, unacceptable: Azad | | | Agencies
New Delhi, Sept 16: Congress leader and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Monday condemned the detention of former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah under the Public Safety Act, saying injustice has been done and it's the country's "misfortune" that leaders who fought for its unity are behind bars. Farooq Abdullah, a three-term chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir and five-time parliamentarian, was arrested on Monday under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) and his residence was declared a jail. Ghulam Nabi Azad said, "Farooq Abdullah's detention is atrocious, unbelievable and unacceptable." The opposition leader targeted the Modi government saying it has lost the plot in Kashmir. Ghulam Nabi Azad said that Farooq Abdullah was part of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government under former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. "Atal Bihari Vajpayee used to consult Farooq Abdullah and seek advise on important issues, but now, Farooq Abdullah is called an anti-national." Ghulam Nabi Azad told Rajdeep Sardesai in the interview that Farooq Abdullah "did his best to put a halt on militancy in Jammu and Kashmir" and is a "nationalist". Ghulam Nabi Azad said that Farooq Abdullah is a "gentleman" who believes in secularism and attends functions irrespective of the religion of a community. Ghulam Nabi Azad shared how Farooq Abdullah's father Sheikh Abdullah helped Jammu and Kashmir become part of the Union. Ghulam Nabi Azad said that the stringent PSA was introduced in Jammu and Kashmir to tackle timber smuggling, and "now his son Farooq Abdullah has been arrested under the law enacted by his father Sheikh Abdullah".
