BJP believes in one nation, one party: Harsh | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 27: Accusing the ruling BJP of killing the soul of democracy in J&K, Harsh Dev Singh JKNPP Chairman and Former Minister said that announcement of BDC elections in the state on political basis, while keeping all top opposition leaders under preventive detention, was full of offense and shock. He said that while the BJP leaders were allowed to hold political meetings and rallies and enjoyed unfettered approach to the voters, the opposition leaders were denied access to general masses as well as the media since August 5. And whereas the saffron party continued its unhindered campaign for second tier of Panchayat elections ever since the passing of J&K Re-organization Act, the entire opposition in the state was barred from indulging in any political activity. "The BJP has demonstrated as to how a massive mandate could become a license for crushing the opposition and extinguishing the democratic chatter altogether. It has amply revealed its penchant for destroying entire opposition with only one party to stay and rule the political turf", said Singh. Reminiscing the speeches of PM Modi during parliamentary elections of making India 'Congress Mukt', Singh said that the BJP now seemed to have embarked upon a mission of making it 'opposition mukt' by making the beginning from J&K. "And for this, it was resorting to witch-hunt, vindictive policies and politics of vendetta. It was trying to instil fear in the minds of not only opposition but the people at large. Dissent in a way, had become impermissible. And a highly impudent and self flattered class of BJP leaders with daggers drawn against the opposition were fighting bitter political battles with their political rivals. The opposition leaders were being treated as enemies rather than political adversaries. The administration too seemed to have transgressed into political arena and was openly promoting a particular party by shunning even the pretense of impartiality. The pressure continued to be mounted on opposition leaders with their democratic rights suppressed while facilitating and endorsing all political activity of the BJP since August 5", said the NPP Chairman. He divulged that as per prevalent practice the Election authorities, both union as well as state, used to convene a meeting of all recognized National and State Parties before taking a decision with regard to conduct of any of the elections in the state. This time, regretted Singh, no such meeting was held with elections decision taken on dictates of ruling party alone. "The ruling BJP has proved by its conduct in the state that it believes in one way communication. Its averse to questioning and averse to opposition. It believes in monologues. Its scheme of things have no role for opposition parties. Its slogan of "one nation, one flag" seems to have enlarged so as to include "one party" within its ambit. The way the democracy was being subverted in the state could lead to a dangerous denouement", said Singh. Describing the move of holding BDC elections during the detention of opposition leaders as devious, totalitarian, undemocratic, sinister and repulsively bizarre, Singh called for immediate indulgence of President of India to save constitution, the democracy and rule of law in the state. |
