Early Times Report
Srinagar, Sept 27: In yet another case of apparent discrimination with Jammu, the Jammu and Kashmir Administration has decided to recruit hundreds of Special Police Officer (SPO)s in Kashmir Province.
Official sources said in the first phase around 1000 SPOs are being appointed from various districts. Official documents revealed that decision has already been given go ahead for districts including Baramulla, Bandipura, Pulwama and Awantipura alone adding that the aspirants have to be from the concerned district alone meaning that no one from Jammu will be able to apply for the post.
Even though militancy has revived in Jammu province and several deadly attacks have taken place in areas like Doda region and even in the heart of Jammu city, no such recruitment drive for SPOs has taken place in winter capital or Doda region in recent past.
Security analyst said it should have been the priority of the administration to recruit SPOs from Jammu district to prevent terrorist from spreading tentacles in the region. "Jammu has largely been a militant free region and thus it is the duty of the police force to prevent spread of militancy. To achieve this the ideal way out is recruitment of youth as SPOs. If Kashmir has this employment scheme, why not Jammu," said a retired a police official on the condition of anonymity.
Since the abrogation of article 370 on Aug 5, the Jammu province and its city in particular are witnessing new lease of apparent discrimination. Even though Jammu upholds the nationalist sentiments and has welcomed Prime Minister Narender Modi's for scrapping the special status, it is Kashmir, which is actually observing hartal against New Delhi decision but getting the perks.
Just recently, to discuss about special package for higher education, a team from Ministry of Human Resource Development, visited Kashmir alone, drawing flak from educationist in Jammu. Prior to that, the government announced a special Rs 28 Crore package for development of Srinagar on modern lines whereas no such package was given to Jammu.
"Jammu continues to be the same old story of neglect and discrimination. If Kashmir needs SPOs why not Jammu as well," said a senior official posted in Civil Secretariat. When contacted a senior official downplayed the matter saying similar SPOS recruitment drive will be held in Jammu soon.
