Congress questions unilateral announcement of BDC polls | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 30: Questioning the unilateral decision and announcement of BDC polls by the government when all important opposition leaders are either detained or restrained from any kind of political activity in the state for over 55 days, Congress has said that this reflects the BJP's new model of democracy for the state. While reacting to the sudden announcement of BDC polls, that too on party basis without removing restrictions on the opposition leaders and not allowing any political activities by all non BJP parties for the last 55 days, is a mockery of democracy in furtherance of BJP's desire for opposition mukt democracy, JKPCC questioned what kind of elections would take place without creating conducive political and security atmosphere in the state. Congress has always struggled for the strengthening of democracy and empowerment of Panchayat Raj System in the state thus providing for a three tier system at par with 73rd Amendment in the state laws, but it is unfortunate that entire opposition was denied any permission to take part in the level playing field for the crucial elections before announcements and still all kind of restrictions continue on Congress and all major opposition parties and groups in the state, whereas elections have been announced unilaterally as the Election Authority under present law has no option when the state government recommends so. JKPCC has blamed BJP of creating a wrong precedent for democracy, as the important electoral exercise in the sensitive state has been set into motion without the entire opposition who were restrained from any kind of political activity for around two months. Surprisingly BJP raise fingers on the past elections but are not realizing their own arbitrariness in the present circumstances to take political advantage of the situation. He said that Congress party would take appropriate decision with regard to the BDC polls, in due course of time in the shortest possible time after consulting the important stake holders especially senior party leaders, most of whom are still under restrictions. |
