With BDC polls round the corner; NC, PDP all set to remain aloof

Early Times Report
srinagar, Oct 7: With the Block Development Council (BDC) elections in Jammu & Kashmir just couple of weeks' away maximum chances are that two leading mainstream political parties of the state would not participate in these elections.
As the leadership of National Conference (NC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is either in jail or under house detention it would be difficult for both the parties to take part in the elections. National Conference has almost given it up and there are least chances that party would fight the BDC polls.
A 15 member delegation of NC led by Jammu Provincial President Devinder Singh Rana met party President Dr. Farooq Abdullah and working President Omar Abdullah on Sunday. The delegation after meeting the party leaders said that there is no question of fighting the BDC polls unless and until the party leadership is not released.
With October 9 being the last date for filing the nomination papers it is highly impossible that NC candidates would vie for the BDC polls. This is possible only when the things are done in a hurriedly manner and the issues get settled down within a day or two. The BDC polls are slated to be held on October 24.
Sources said that for NC to take part in elections the state administration has to first release the party leaders and then the leaders have to meet and take a call on taking a part in the BDC elections. All this has to be done in a day and that is not possible given the current scenario of the state.
"In the present day context it is almost done that Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) would have advantageous position in the BDC polls. Maximum chances are that the party would have clean sweep in the councils and they would rule over most of the Panchayats in Jammu & Kashmir," said sources.
Although, National Conference has almost made it clear that it would not fight the BDC polls the position of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is somewhat not clear. The party leaders would have to released and only then they could meet so as to take decision about the participation or otherwise in BDC elections.
Even though the Jammu based leaders of PDP were permitted to hold deliberations with the party President Mehbooba Mufti in Srinagar today the visit could not materialize due to the reasons known to the party members. This has virtually given a chance to BJP to fight the BDC polls and win them too.
Congress party had decided to fight the BDC polls and the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) Chief, Ghulam Ahmad Mir issued a press note in this regard as well. However, up to this moment of time the party has not announced its candidates and as such there are least chances that Congress would be a part of BDC polls in Jammu & Kashmir.
