Search operation launched after BSF sights drones flying along India-Pakistan border in Punjab's Ferozepur
10/8/2019 7:47:32 PM

New Delhi: Border Security Force (BSF) personnel have launched search operations after five drones were sighted along the India-Pakistan border in Punjab. According to a report the search operation is being conducted with the help of local police. More information is also being sought from local residents.

According to BSF officials, the movement was seen four times on the Pakistan side, and once in the Indian side. Police officials are also investigating the likely possibilities of drones being used to drop ammunitions or narcotics along the borders.

A high alert has been issued in the area — Times Now channel reported citing sources. "BSF personnel at Hussainiwala border post in Ferozepur spotted a drone on Monday night entered from Pakistan's side to India's side. A search operation is on after BSF informed Punjab police. The local police are investigating the matter," news agency ANI reported citing BSF sources. The drones were spotted by BSF personnel at Hussainiwala border in Ferozepur on Monday night.

The sightings come amid escalated tensions between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir issue. In response to India's decision to abrogate Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan has downgraded diplomatic ties with India and attempted to internationalise the matter. On September 27, during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Pakistan PM Imran Khan vehemently issued threats of a possible nuclear war between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir matter.

Intelligence inputs have already suggested of likely terrorist attacks in India. In fact, most recently, Army Chief General Bipin Rawat had said that the Balakot terror camp, which was destroyed by the IAF after the February 14 Pulwama attack, has been activated again.

The movement of drones also comes on the backdrop of the UAV attack on the Saudi oil fields which has prompted the government to frame policies regarding usage of drones in the country.
