Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 11: Against the backdrop of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment to fight against single use plastic, there is no taker in Jammu and Kashmir where in official terms there is no ban on the use of even polythene carry bags, which have been used in abundance.
Though after the announcement made by Prime Minister during his Independence day speech to do away with single use plastics from October 2, much confusion has been prevailing in the state. Raids were conducted by enforcement agencies along with announcements through various media channels after which even action was also taken against some vendors, who were found using the polythene carry bags and the polythene carry bags were also seized.
Even the shopkeepers as well as vendors have started refusing to give articles in polythene carry bags, in view of ban on the polythene carry bags while those who have been using the polythene carry bags have been under suspicion of being penalized by enforcement agencies.
There was no clarity over the ban on single use plastics and even public representatives as well as officials of several departments were found appealing to masses to not use single use plastics. But in official terms there is no ban on even polythene carry bags.
Regional Director Jammu of State Pollution Control Board, Dr. Syed Nadeem Hussian said that though the department was hoping for some official order on the ban on October 2 but no such order was issued by Union or State government.
"In view of no official order, the status before October 2 still exists and polythene carry bags below 50 microns thickness are banned in the state while polythene carry bags above 50 microns are not banned", he said, adding that even an industry owner has been supplying woven carry bags, which seemed to be made of cloth but it was actually made of secondary polythene, which was also banned and equally dangerous.
