Early Times Report

JAMMU, Oct 11: A protest demonstration was held by Congress and independent councilors of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) here today in front of Council Hall at JMC Complex, Town Hall.
All the protesting councilors want regular General House Meetings. They said that the Mayor adjourned General House Meeting on September 6 without announcing date of next meeting which is not fair because no business could be transacted in Genera House Meeting. The Mayor failed to satisfy the councilors who raised questions during General House Meeting and left the house without announcing next meeting.
One to five General House Meetings can be conducted in a month. One meeting is mandatory. One year has lapsed after completion of election of ULBs but only 5 meetings could be conducted, they added. It is evident that Mayor is not serious about the General House Meetings. It is requested that General House Meeting may be conducted at an earliest. A deputation of 19 councilors also met with Commissioner and Secretary JMC for calling special General House Meeting but Mayor did not take any action. Protesting councilors expressed concern over the problems being faced by them as well as people living within municipal limits. The councilors said that all the councilors of JMC irrespective of political affiliations are facing problem due to shortage of funds for developmental activities. After lapse of 11 months, work of stage 1st to the tune of Rs 10 lakh only could be completed, they added. The councilors said that though the Governor announced ample funding for the Srinagar Municipal Corporation he did not bother about the release of funds in case of Jammu Municipal Corporation. This is glaring example of discrimination with the people of Jammu adding that main reason for this large scale discrimination with the people of Jammu is non-seriousness of the JMC Mayor. The councilors also raised the issue of shortage of Safai Karamcharis in different wards of Jammu city besides they demanded enquiry against allegations of corruption on JMC officers and highlighted several other concerns affecting the smooth functioning of the JMC. The councilors who joined protest demonstration include Dwarka Choudhary, Vijay Choudhary, Sham Lal Basson, Ashok Singh Manhas, Gourav Chopra, Prof Youdhvir Singh, Rajni Bala, Kamalo Singh, Inder Singh Sudan, Bhanu Mahajan, Anita Sharma, Pritam Singh, Amit Gupta, Sucha Singh, Sandhya Gupta, Shamma Akhtar, Sobat Ali, Anu Bali, Ritu Chowdhary, Jagdish Sharma, Rashpal Bhardwaj, Ghar Singh, Rani Devi, Rama Devi, Charanjeet Kour, Mohi-ud-din and Gurmeet Kour Randhawa.
