Internet to remain alien to Valley till March next year as Govt cites security issues prime reason | ET Report Vindicated; Govt restoring post-paid mobile services in Kashmir by Monday | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 12: Report carried out by the Early Times newspaper on October 11 about the restoration of mobile telephony in Kashmir was vindicated by the government Asit announced that the post paid mobile service will be restored by Monday. Government spokesman and Principal Secretary to Government Rohit Kansal said while briefing the press in Srinagar's media facilitation centre that by Monday afternoon all the post paid mobile services will be restored. He also added that the pre paid cellular service shall be restored in a phased manner. ET had reported in detail that the decisions taken in this regard that the mobile telephone services in Kashmir valley shall be restored in phases and in the very first phase and that there are chances that same will be done by Monday-Oct 14. "Also, as per the reports coming to fore, the postpaid mobile phones will be restored in the first place and after the thorough assessment of the situation, the pre-paid mobile phones will restored after a week. It is going to be a very peculiar issue and there has been a complete consensus on how to make the situation better on ground and allow people to use communication facilities to the fullest,"the report had mentioned. Meanwhile, there are least chances that internet services in Kashmir will be restored in 2019 and that if sources are to be believed, both the broadband and the mobile internet services aren't going to be made functional at least till March in Kashmir as the government apprehends that any such measure is taken, it will make controlling the law and order situation a very herculean task on the ground. The Cellular Operators Association of India an amalgam of GSM mobile players, had revealed that the overall telecom industry operating in the valley suffers the loss of Rs 2 crores on daily basis when the calling and data services are suspended. The present communication gag is longest in a decade. "In 2016, internet was suspended in Kashmir for 133 days but V-Sat, landline broadband and lease lines were operational. This time, the case is different at all. There is a complete blackout this time around. According to a recent study conducted by International Council on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) which states that, "The anatomy of the internet blackout: Measuring the economic impact of internet shutdowns in India has stated in their study that 34 internet shutdowns in the year 2017 caused losses worth 1776 crores to the valleys economy. The study further revealed that the frequent suspension of the internet services has dealt a body blow to Kashmir's fragile economy resulting in losses of about 4000 crores since 2013. According to the estimates of study, the present gag is longest ever in the history of globe. A senior official of the state administration also revealed that after a thorough assessment on ground, there are least chances that the government could take the risk of restoring the mobile and broadband internet services. |
