Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Oct 12: In a major relief for the people of Kashmir the administration led by Governor Satya Pal Malik has decided to resume the post paid mobile services in the entire valley from Monday afternoon. This was disclosed by Principal Secretary Planning and Development, Rohit Kansal while addressing a press conference here today. Kansal said that post paid mobile services across the 10 districts of Kashmir valley would resume and restart on Monday from noon afterwards. The Principal Secretary who is also the government spokesman said that all the post paid mobile phones irrespective of the cellular operator would start functioning from Monday (October 14). He said that decision about the resumption of pre-paid mobile phones in Kashmir would be taken at the appropriate time. It would be in place to mention here Kashmir valley has 66 lakh mobile subscribers out of which 40 lakh are post paid mobile users. Kansal said that Kashmir is the only region in the country where post paid mobile subscribers, outnumber the pre-paid mobile users. The residents of the valley were yearning for the day when restoration of mobile services would be a reality. Today's decision is all set to gladden hearts of Kashmir as the absence of cellular services affected different facets of life. The normal life has been badly hampered by the non-functioning of mobile services across the length and breadth of the valley. Very little activity is possible in Kashmir at present and the non-connectivity among the people through cellular services is one of the main reasons for the same. People as a whole believe that thin attendance of students in schools and colleges is due to the absence of mobile connectivity in the valley. They say that parents are not ready to send their wards to schools, colleges and universities unless and until the mobile services are not restored. "A parent is not willing to send his or her child to the educational institute since there is no communication. As and when the mobile phones start functioning yet again one can hope for good attendance in the different educational institutions," said Mushtaq Ahmad, a teacher. The masses in general are complaining that the disruption in mobile services have rendered them incommunicado with their relatives and dear ones. They said that the administration's decision to restore the post paid mobile phones from Monday would help them to know about the well being of their dear ones. "My daughter is appearing in the examination at the Government Medical College, Srinagar. Given the fact that there is no mobile connectivity we have no touch with her. Since very few households have fixed (landline) phone connections the connectivity has gone for a six in the Kashmir valley," said Shakeel Ahmad, a resident of Kupwara. At a time when the whole world has shrunk into a global village people of Kashmir are waiting for the exact moment when their mobile phones would start ringing once again. They believe that situation is under control and there is no justification to deny Kashmiris the right to contact through mobile phones. |
