Students demand concessions, authorities seem reluctant
Announcement of examination dates triggers a row

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Oct 12: Even as the authorities announced dates for 10th and 12th class annual examinations, the students have demanded concessions.
A group of students accompanied by their parents told Early Times that only 46% of the syllabus was completed till August 5 when life came to a standstill in the state in view of the revocation of article 35A and 370 of the constitution of India which conferred special status on the state.
They said the tuition centres were also closed down leaving the students high and dry.
However, informed sources said that the authorities were reluctant to grant any concession to the students. The sources quoting the authorities said: "The schools were opened the government a month ago but the students did not turn up. It is their fault. There will be no concession."
Terming it an act of vengeance, the aggrieved parents said the authorities want to prove that their writ runs in Kashmir by victimising the students. "No parent can send his ward to the school in the situation that emerged post August 5. There have been instances when school buses have been pelted with stones. A teacher of a public school sustained injuries when a stone hit her," they said.
"The situation warrants a lenient approach from the authorities in view of the prevailing situation. The students deserve some concession,' the parents demanded.
Pertinently the students of lower classes were given assignments by the schools to assess them. The assignments have been submitted and also evaluated by the teachers.
The teachers of top public schools believe that after evaluating the assignments, the students can be safely promoted to higher classes.
The authorities declared the schools open in a phased manner last month but the students stayed away. Similarly the colleges opened on October 9 but no students turned up much to the disappointment of the authorities.
