Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 2: Though the grim pollution scenario in New Delhi has attracted the attention of country towards the issue but the worsening scenario in Kathua industrial area has so far caught the authorities in slumber while the locals have been suffocating for the last many months.
According to locals, earlier there were cement plants, which had been emanating poisonous smoke during night hours but few years back a new tyre crushing industrial unit was operationalized near Chenab Textile Mills, which has become a cause of worst pollution problem in the town.
Time and again, some locals had raised the issue and even agitations were also launched against the worsening pollution problem but most of the movements died a silent death and some after entering into deals with the culprits.
Sources informed that every evening as the darkness descended in the town, the industrial units closed down their pollution treatment plants and discharge liquid as well as air pollution with impunity.
"The concerned officials of the enforcement agencies have adopted a cryptic silence and whenever some voices are raised against the pollution problem, the initiated some ritualistic exercise of actions but the net result remains same as they continue to pollute the environment without any hindrance", sources said, adding that the pollution problem has become so grim that during night hours it was almost impossible to walk on the roads from Hatli-Morh, Sawan Chak and other connected areas to the industrial area.
As the cover of darkness fall, the roads of town were covered with the plumes of smoke and pungent smell, making it difficult to smoke. "The air pollution has been becoming so grim that it is definitely leads to several respiratory difficulties but authorities have yet to quantify the losses on account of health problems of the locals", sources said, adding that the lacklusture approach of the authorities has been making the area unable to live.
