SRINAGAR, Nov 4: One civilian was killed; three Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) security personnel and 15 people were injured in a grenade attack at Gonikhan area of Hari Singh High Street (HSHS) in Srinagar on Monday. While as the condition of two civilians is stated to be critical.
Today's attack is sixth grenade attack since August 5, when Centre scrapped Article 370 on August 5 and bifurcate the erstwhile state into two Union Territories (UTs).
As per the eye witness, "Around 1:30 PM, a grenade was lobbed by unidentified person in a busy market at Gonikhan market, where scores of people were busy in buying essential commodities, resulting in injuries to score of people".
He added that market was abuzz with people and a loud sound of grenade created panic in the market and people were seen looking for the safe zone.
Another eye witness said, "I saw people falling on the ground in the pool of blood and one of the injured was a non-local who sustained multiple splinter injuries in his body".
An official identified the deceased as a non local resident namely Rinku Singh of Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. While as three SSB personnel were among the injured. As per the locals, Rinku Singh was selling essential homemade items at Amira Kadal Bridge.
J&K Police Tweeted, "3 SSB personnel and 15 civilians injured. One Rinku Singh of Saharanpur succumbed. Two locals Aijaj and Fayaz Ahmed are serious. Police and security forces are taking follow up action".
Soon after the attack, heavy contingents of police including paramilitary CRPF reached the site of incident and entire area was cordoned off and massive manhunt launched. So far six grenade attacks have took place in the different parts of the valley.
Today's attack is the second grenade attack in the area in one month. In the last such attack, seven people including a woman sustained injuries. While as, On October 28, 19 people sustained injuries in the grenade attack in the busy market near general bus stand Sopore.
While as 13 people sustained injuries in a grenade attack at Anantnag on October 5 and Six Central Police Force Personnel were sustained injuries in a grenade attack outside SMHS hospital Srinagar on October 26. Also, a grenade was tossed in Nawa Kadal area of Srinagar that however, didn't cause any injury.
