DPS Nagbani holds 'Dastangoi' competition | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 27: To promote the value and importance of ancient art forms among the students, a competition on 'Dastangoi'was held in DPS Nagbani. Dastangoi is an ancient Urdu, oral form of storytelling which had died down by the early Twentieth century. The art from originated in Pre-Islamic Arabia and was extremely popular in India between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries especially among the rich elites and commoners of Delhi and Lucknow. The competition was conducted by Mubashara Masood, an Urdu teacher in the school. She divided the participants into two groups. Each group was asked to prepare a 'dastan' of their own and present it to the audience in the dastangoi style. They were supposed to explain each aspects of the story elaborately so that the listeners would start to visualize it. The facilitator began by introducing the facts on the art form. She then demonstrated the skill by telling two stories in this style. She taught the students how to unfold the Veases and get hold of the attention of the audience by knitting the threads of the story. Next she asked the students to make an attempt at narrating a selective piece of story. The Principal of the school R. K. Verma said that the students said that it was really interesting to see the students getting involved in learning this art form and reshaping its tradition. He said that this new beginning will give Dastangoi a new introduction and will bring it closer to commoners and help it to survive for generations to come. |
