Detained mainstream leaders resign to fact that clock cannot be reversed | Prefer 'silence' after abrogation of special status to JK | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Dec 17: Most of the mainstream politicians lodged at the legislators' hostel have resigned to the fact that they cannot reverse the clock and as such would not be able to restore statehood to the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir. Sources told Early Times that these politicians have in principle agreed to the fact that they would not speak against the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A and also scrapping of statehood to Jammu & Kashmir. They said that most of these leaders have decided to remain 'silent' on the issue as and when they are released. "The defensive approach of the leaders can be gauged by the fact that some of the leaders who were recently released did not utter a word about the prevailing situation in Jammu & Kashmir especially Kashmir valley. The same approach was adopted by few other leaders who were shifted from legislators' hostel to their respective residences," said sources. Sources said that barring a couple the other mainstream leaders have decided to take the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A in their stride and decided to move ahead with the time. They said that these leaders realize that it would be a herculean task to revive the special status given to the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir under the Constitution of India. "Many second rung and third rung leaders of the different mainstream parties have already been released, but none among them has spoken against the Government of India and the steps taken over the past four months or so. The mainstream leaders have virtually surrendered and same has been proved time and again since August 5," said sources. It would be in place to mention here that mainstream leaders like Ghulam Hassan Mir, Abdul Rehman Veeri and Mohammad Dilawar Mir were released from the legislators' hostel some weeks back. At the same time leaders like Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen and Mohammad Ashraf Mir were shifted from the legislators' hostel and placed under house arrest at their respective residences. None of the leaders who were released or shifted from legislators' hostel speak against the steps taken by New Delhi and as such did not issue any statement in this regard. This has given enough hints that the mainstream leaders have accepted the reality and are not willing to go against Government of India. More than 30 mainstream leaders were placed under arrest at the Centaur hotel located on the banks of world famous Dal Lake here immediately after the parliament passed a resolution abrogating Articles 370 and 35A on August 5. The Centaur hotel was converted into a subsidiary jail and the inmates were shifted to legislators' hostel located on the Maulana Azad road on November 17. Three former chief ministers including the current Lok Sabha member from Srinagar parliamentary seat are serving detention at different places. While Dr. Farooq Abdullah, the Lok Sabha MP has been detained at his residence, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti have been placed under arrest and lodged at Cheshmashahi guest house and private accommodation at MA Road. Dr. Abdullah was booked under Public Safety Act (PSA) and his detention was extended by three months just recently. |
