early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Dec 24: Curtains seem to have fallen over Junaid Azim Mattu as Mayor of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) as a group of councilors of the Corporation today moved an application showing no confidence over Mattu as the city father.
Early Times has learnt from sources that a group of 40 councilors of SMC moved an application with the Commissioner, Srinagar Municipal Corporation seeking withdrawal of support to Mattu as Mayor of SMC. The councilors in the application have written that they have no faith in Mattu and as such he should be removed from his position.
“Through the application the councilors have moved a no-confidence motion against the Mayor and they have sought his immediate removal. The application has been submitted to the office of Commissioner SMC and it has been urged that necessary action and that too at the earliest should be initiated,” said sources.
Sources said that 40 councilors of the SMC have put their signatures on the application and it is for sure that they would vote against the Mayor as and when the said process is taken up by the Corporation. They said these councilors are backed by Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) and are likely to vote for their own candidate in the next elections for the new Mayor of SMC.
Sources said that some of the top notch leaders of BJP including a former minister are camping at Srinagar in order to dislodge Mattu from the position of Mayor SMC. They said the only mission of these BJP leaders was to ensure that BJP has its own person as city father.
“The mission was in fact called as Mission Mattu and all the resources were pumped in by the BJP in order to ensure removal of the present Mayor of SMC. It seems the party has succeeded in their mission and Mattu is all set to lose the race of Mayorship to some other councilor having the backing of BJP,” said sources.
It would be in place to mention here that over the past one week or so it had become talk of the town that the Mayor of SMC would be removed from his position. Deputy Mayor of SMC, Sheikh Mohammad Imran was on Monday removed from his post after 47 councilors of the Corporation moved a resolution seeking his removal.
“Although these 47 councilors pledged their support to Mattu the things took a new twist today as 40 councilors moved the application with Commissioner SMC seeking removal of Mattu as Mayor of SMC. It remains to be seen how the things unfold over the next few days and who would be the next Mayor of SMC,” said sources.
Mattu was elected Mayor of Srinagar Municipal Corporation as the municipal polls were held after a gap of 13 years in 2018 while as Imran was elected as the Deputy Mayor. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor were at loggerheads on many occasions with their supporters coming to blows on some occasions.
