‘Corrupt Kashmir centric leaders may end up in jail’ | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 4: Working President of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) J P Nadda has hinted that Kashmir centric politicians, who were involved in corrupt practices in the past, are likely to end up in jail.“The law such as the Prevention of Anti-Corruption Act was not implemented in Jammu and Kashmir, so the leaders could have their way out despite being involved in corruption,” Nadda said. He said that the Government of India kept on giving them money and they kept on “siphoning” it. An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “Nadda’s statement is a clear warning to the politicians, who ruled Jammu and Kashmir during the past 70-years. Many cases were registered against the politicians in the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir but none of these politicians were held accountable as they always considered themselves to be above the law.” He said, “With J&K Reorganization Act being implemented in Jammu and Kashmir the corrupt politicians are all set to face the music. There are reports that the investigating agencies are probing the assets acquired by the politicians disproportionate to their known sources of income.”An observer said, “Since the day Jammu and Kashmir has started functioning as Union Territory maximum of the central laws which were not applicable in J&K prior to August 5, 2019 have become applicable. There is a bleak possibility about corrupt politicians being spared now.”He said that the ambit of Central Bureau of Investigation being extended to Jammu and Kashmir means that the CBI can carry out the investigations without seeking permission from the J&K Government. “The recent developments have created flutters in the political circles,” the observer added. “There are reports that many politicians have made huge investments in real estate and have helped their kith and kin to set up big business houses within Kashmir and outside the Valley,” the observer claimed. Another analyst said that the then PDP-Congress government led by late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had set up a State Accountability Commission (SAC) during its first stint in power in Jammu and Kashmir. The SAC’s mandate was to probe the allegations of corruption against the politicians but the SAC could do little due to the influence and power enjoyed by these politicians. History stands testimony to the fact that politicians in Kashmir always enjoyed impunity and all the privileges but times have changed now so have the priorities of the Centre. They cannot dictate terms and blackmail New Delhi anymore,” he added.
