BJP gets shot in the arm in SMC | | |
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 6: In a significant development, as many as nine independent corporators in the Srinagar Municipal Corporation have joined the Bharatiya Janta Party while a dozen more are likely to join in the coming weeks, giving a major strength to the national party in the civic body. Officials told Early Times that the BJP had mere four corporators of its own who had won the previous elections in the civic body during the Local Urban Body Polls. “But with nine independents having joined us the strength has risen to thirteen,” said a BJP leader. He said more of the independent corporators would join the party in the coming days. Sources said the independent candidates have been telling the BJP to opt for a no confidence motion against the Mayor who is from the Peoples Conference. Sources said the development has unnerved the PC led by Sajad Lone. Sources said the PC is so tense after the developments too place that some of its leaders presently under detention at the MLA Hostel Subjail here had managed to make a phone call to such corporators who were planning a “no confidence motion”. As per the BJP, one PC leader had threatened the corporators on phone and that a complaint has been filed with the Raj Bagh Police Station. Political analysts said the recent developments including sacking of PC leader Sheikh Imran from the chair of Deputy Mayor in SMC has already shocked the PC. “The developments suggest that the BJP and PC relations have run into rough weather and now the national party has got support of the independents who are joining the party,” said a politician. Talking to reporters recently, senior BJP leader Ashok Koul has not ruled out his party’s support to the no confidence motion against the Mayor if the independent corporators opt for it. Despite repeated attempts the concerned were not available for comments.
