Regional parties ‘cooling down’, inching towards New Delhi | | | EARLY TIMES Report
Srinagar, Jan 6: The National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party seem to have finally given up the “rigid stand” against the abrogation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir as the twin parties recently held their party meetings in a “cordial manner and no browbeating at New Delhi” hinting at improvement of relations with the center. In a surprise development, on December 23, both the NC and PDP, held separate meetings at their party headquarters in the summer capital. Interestingly the PDP held a parallel meeting in Jammu as well. While the NC and PDP sought release of political detainees, the two parties remained silent over the abrogation of the special status though in the past that their leaders would raise a hue and cry on the development. The NC meeting focused more on the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act in the country. For the PDP, while the meeting held in Jammu sought release of detained politicians, the meeting held in Srinagar discussed arrangements for the upcoming death anniversary of PDP founder and former Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed. Sources said the leaders of both the parties are willing to negotiate with New Delhi over restoration of their respective political activities in Kashmir and subsequent participation in the Assembly elections likely to be held in this newly established Union Territory in the middle of 2020. Sources said at all the three meetings the political leaders were “cautious in selection of words and issues that were discussed.” “No one from our side wanted to make a statement which lands him or her in jail,” said an insider in the NC. It is pertinent to mention that the NC had recently contradicted its senior leader that the party would not contest elections till Article 370 is restored. Sources said given the “change in rigid stand” of the regional parties, New Delhi was discussing the issue of release of politicians who have been detained since August 5. |
