All notions dispelled | | | The decision of Jammu and Kashmir administration to rechristen J&K Police medals by deleting Sher-e-Kashmir seems to be just a beginning. There is every possibility about the title of late National Conference founder, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, being removed from the names of the government institutions, where it has been prefixed. The National Conference which ruled J&K for many years after 1947, ensured that the title of its founder is prefixed everywhere. The NC’s narrative during all these years has revolved around their founder only as the party failed to produce any other leader after him. The changes which Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing after the transition of the erstwhile State into a Union Territory were long overdue. Kashmir centric politicians had created a notion that J&K is their fiefdom and they have been born to rule. They made fortunes during the past seven decades by claiming that they represent the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Important government institutions in Jammu and Kashmir should have been renamed long ago but whosoever came to power in New Delhi didn’t dare to make any changes as the Kashmir centric leaders had created a notion that if any changes are made Kashmir would slip into the lap of Pakistan. On August 5, 2019, the incumbent BJP led NDA government decided to bite the bullet and made the changes which had not been made during the past 70-years. Kashmir centric leaders, who used to make tall claims about them being the representatives of the people, were taken into custody to ensure that law and order is maintained. Even the GoI was expecting that protest would breakout after the so-called “tall leaders” of Kashmir are put under detention. But people didn’t react. Not a single Kashmiri came out on streets to seek the release of the leaders, who during the past seven decades propagated everything from Sher-e-Kashmir to autonomy to keep themselves relevant on the political arena of J&K. Prior to changing the nomenclature of the police medals, the Jammu and Kashmir administration cancelled the holiday, which was given on the occasion of Sheikh Abdullah’s birthday. The government cancelling the holiday on Sheikh’s birthday passed off as a non-event. It’s evident that if the government removes the prefix Sher-e-Kashmir from the names of all government institutions it won’t evoke any reaction from the common people, who probably for the first time since 1990 are living a life free of hartals and disturbances in Kashmir. |
