Srinagar Airport to get another expansion as Jammu work lingers for 15 yrs | | | AB Sharma
Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 11: Even as the government is mulling expansion of the Srinagar International Airport for the second consecutive time in the last decade-and-a -half, the work on modernization of the similar facility in Jammu is “pending for the last over 15 years.” Official sources told Early Times that the government is looking ahead to expand the terminal building of the Srinagar airport at Humhama on outskirts of Srinagar from the existing around 15,000 square feet area to over 30,000 square feet area. The sources said a meeting in this regard will be convened in the coming days. This means, after the previous expansion of the terminal building, done around 15 years ago, when the airport was modernized, another plan is underway to redouble the facilities. It is pertinent to mention that after the previous upgradation of the Srinagar airport, it was given the status of international airport, ready to cater to even international flights. But the airport expansion work in Jammu in Satwari is finding no end. This is despite the fact the with Mata Vaishnu Devi shrine attracting around one crore pilgrims annually to Jammu, the airport at Satwari awaits upgradation for many years. Market pundits said Jammu has been craving for international airport for several years. “Not only from the tourism point of view but being the industrial hub in the region, upgradation of Jammu airport on international lines has remained much-needed. But unfortunately this dream is yet to fully realize,” said an observer from the City of Temples. The people of Jammu have been blaming successive regimes for the apparent discrimination with the winter capital region in general and the winter capital in particular. “None of the ambitious projects started in Jammu found timely completion… The facts remains that most such projects including creation of artificial lake on river Tawi were actually abandoned after years of delay by the previous regimes,” said Praveen Kumar a Jammuite. When contacted a senior official told Early Times that all pending projects would be completed in Jammu. He said the Lieutenant Governor has taken a serious note of the delay in completion of such projects and that he has directed the concerned for timely completion of all such facilities on priority.
