Providing basic amenities no favour: Munish to administration | Missing dustbins, heaps of open garbage dumps from Kunjwani to Bishnah puncture cleanliness claim | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Feb 27: Editor Early Times, Munish Gupta, on Thursday urged the authorities to install dustbins from Kunjwani to Bishnah and get the garbage cleared so that the people can breathe fresh air. Munish, who would be contesting the forthcoming Assembly elections from Gandhi Nagar constituency said, “Its unfortunate that the denizens of these areas are suffering due to the laidback approach of the concerned authorities. People at the helm need to wake up as the open garbage dumps in these areas have become a breeding ground for the insects and stray animals.” Munish said that residents are not demanding any favour. “Its the duty of the authorities to ensure that common people are provided with hygienic environment and the basic amenities,” he said. The Editor Early Times said that the system has changed but the people are not feeling the change on the ground. “The change has to be visible and providing basic amenities to the people is the first step towards the change,” he added. Meanwhile, residents of Kunjwani and Bishnah area while talking to Early Times said, “No dustbins have been provided and the garbage is dumped on the road connecting Kunjwani with Bishnah. The stink emanating from the garbage has made the lives of the people miserable.” A group of residents comprising of Jaspreet Singh, Manmeet Singh, Ranjeet Singh, Kamal, Amreek Singh, Jasbir Singh, Hans Raj and Mohinder Singh said that garbage dumped on the road remains unattended. In absence of dustbins the garbage dumped on the road has become a nuisance. Stray dogs and cattle squatter upon the waste and also consume it. Either bins should be placed or garbage should be cleared regularly, they added. “It seems that the administration has completely forgotten about the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which was started with much fanfare,” said the residents. “Piles of garbage present in front of my shop have hit my business. During rains, this garbage becomes a source of communicable diseases. But nobody seems bothered to take any necessary action,” said one of the shopkeepers. “Poor condition of the link roads and choked drains have aggravated our problems. The government has completely failed to maintain the roads and drains despite the issue being brought into the notice of the authorities on many occasions,” said few other shopkeepers and residents. Residents appealed the concerned authorities to come forward to make Jammu city clean and green. |
