Do justice with children | | | The implementation of Right to Education (RTE) Act in Jammu and Kashmir after its reorganization on August 5 last year has paved the way for Directorate of School Educations in Jammu and Kashmir regions to ban the private tuitions given by the teachers working in government schools. In the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir, the helmsmen on many occasions made an attempt to stop the teachers from spending more time in the tuition centres rather than the educational institutions but the ban couldn’t be implemented. The government run schools have remained in news for longtime due to wrong reasons. The poor performance of students studying in these institutions has always been a matter of concern. Despite many steps taken by the administration the students of government schools have been unable to compete with their counterparts in the private institutions. The enquiries which were ordered to ascertain the reason behind the poor performance of the students on many occasions revealed that the teachers don’t put in their best and that leads to the students underperforming. Till August 5, 2019, the RTE was not applicable in J&K, and the political dispensations which ruled the erstwhile State never made an attempt to get this important Act implemented in J&K. The politicians unfortunately tried to politicize the education sector. In Kashmir region the Directorate of School Education has already issued a notification to ban the private tuitions, similar action is expected in Jammu region also. The coaching centres functional across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir are mostly run by the teachers working in government schools. Authorities need to take strict action to end this practice so that the government schools in J&K are brought at par with the private schools. It has been observed that the students of private institutions are better equipped than the ones studying in the government schools. The salary of the teachers working in private schools is less than the ones working in government schools. In fact there is no comparison. The only practicable solution which can make the things better is to impose a ban on the private tuitions. The ban should not remain confined to papers only. It needs to be implemented so that the children from all sections of the society get equal opportunities. The teachers should bear in mind that the government every year spends crores of rupees on the education sector to ensure that children irrespective of them being poor or rich don’t suffer as they are the future of our nation. |
