Dozens of far flung, remote areas remain cut off in north Kashmir | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Feb 29: Dozens of far flung and remote areas, including those near the Line of Control (LoC) in the frontier district of Kupwara remained cut off for the second day on Saturday due to fresh snowfall and avalanches. Meanwhile, the road connecting Bandipora with border town of Gurez, which is surrounded by Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) from three sides also remained closed for the past over two months due to accumulation of snow, particularly at Razdan pass. There was fresh snowfall and avalanches during the past 24 hours forcing authorities to suspended traffic on Kupwara-Keran, Kupwara-Karnah and Kupwara-Machil roads, an official of Police Control Room (PCR), Kupwara told .He said Z-Gali, Phirkiyan, Sadhna pass, connecting dozens of far flung and remote villages, including those near LoC with district and tehsil headquarterss, received over one foot of fresh snowfall since Friday. Though road clearance operation has been started on all roads, but there is a threat of snow avalanches, he said adding traffic will be resumed on these roads only after receiving green signal that there is no threat of avalanches. There was also fresh snowfall at Razdan pass which connects border town of Gurez, Neeru and other border villages with Bandipora. The road remained closed for the past over two months due to accumulation of snow. The local residents of Gurez, who are demanding construction of a tunnel at Razdan pass to make it all weather road, demanded airlifting of stranded students and teachers. They said a number of schools in Gurez and other border areas are without teachers who could not join their duties after winter vacation due to closure of the road. |
