Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 29: Even as Jammu and Kashmir was known for clean and healthy air till a few decades ago, over the years the air pollution has exceeded the permissible limits, raising concerns over the health of the people.
Official documents reveal that the uncontrolled rise in number of vehicles has not only contributed to the air pollution but has also led by health hazards with many of the deadly ailments including cancer being linked to the degrading air quality.
An official notification accessed by the Early Times reveals that “The uncontrolled vehicular growth on the roads of Jammu and Kashmir has pushed the Union Territory in the category of non-attainment cities where air pollution has exceeded the permissible limit.”
The government has linked the bad air quality to the condition of public health. “According to the reports, the major risk factor for heart diseases, stroke, lung cancer and asthama in Jammu and Kashmir is air pollution,” the report added.
Over the years, the “dynasts” from Kashmir who ruled the former state for the past over seventy years were often accused of corruption –something that may have contributed even in the uncontrolled rise in number of vehicles.
A senior official said the government would need to take strict decisions to check air pollution. “See now it’s not anything normal but abnormal, which is affecting the health of people as there is a rise in the number of deadly ailments like cancer here(in J&K),” said a health expert.
When contacted a senior official confirmed about the notification adding that government has initiated actions to check the quality of the air.
He said the government would have to comply to the guidelines of the National Green Tribunal or else the concerned agencies would have to face strict action.
