Early Times Report

Rajouri, Mar 1: It seems that child labour has become common thing in government schools of Rajouri district. The girl students of Government Girls Middle School (GGMS) Bareri of Nowshera Sub Division were forced to carry chairs on their head for half a kilometre for retirement function of their headmistress, which has brought shame to the department.
Sources told Early Times that although many incidents of forced labour from students by the school administrations were reported in recent past through media yet the school heads hardly bothered to understand the sensitivity of the matter and continue to make gross violation of the Child Labour Act.
They further said that there was retirement function in Government Girls Middle School (GGMS) Bareri on February 29 of its headmistress and as a part of arrangements, the girl students were asked to bring the chairs from local Community Hall on previous day (February 28), which was nearly half a kilometre from the school.
The locals informed the Early Times that they saw girls, who had lifted chairs on their head and were heading towards the school. It was live example of sheer exploitation of poor girl students, and the teachers were looking as spectators. They further said that already the education standard in government schools in this district is bad and such incidents make education institutions degrade.
Pertinently, similar shameful incident took place earlier last month when students of Government Boys Higher Secondary School Nowshera were forced to close the floor mats and carry them after completion of Union Minister’s visit in the school in January during Public Outreach Programme. Similarly students of Government High School Girls (GHSG) Ari in Poonch were also forced to the carry study desks for 2.5 kms.
ADC Nowshera Sub Division Sukhdev Singh Sambyal, when contacted said that although this matter pertains to Education Department but even then he would take note of it.
Director School Education Jammu, Anuradha Gupta, when contacted, didn’t pick phone and messaged the scribe to communicate through text message as she is busy in some meeting. Despite informing the DSE Jammu about the matter through text but she didn’t reply.
