Seven years passed, proposal to check pilferage of Govt ration still in infancy
3/1/2020 11:53:55 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 1: The proposal of the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CA&PD) department to install Global Positioning System (GPS) is all vehicles to stop pilferage of government is still in the “infancy” because vested interests in the department are not allowing functioning of this system.
Over seven-year back this proposal was made to install GPS in the vehicles engaged in the transportation of government ration but proposal has yet to be implemented.
Credible sources said that some officers/official allegedly involved in the pilferage of the ration meant for poor people were creating hurdles because this proposal will stop them from making huge money by selling ration in the open market.
As reported earlier in the year 2013 the CAPD department had announced to install GPS in all State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) vehicles, trucks and other load carriers before transporting government ration from one place to another.
This proposal was announced after higher-ups received several complaints regarding pilferage of the government ration in the state. To curb the menace, the department had decided to transport government ration only through SRTC vehicles and for that purpose but proposal remained only on papers.
The people in far-off and remote areas of the state had been complaining pilferage of government ration either by private transporters or middlemen.
It was announced that installation of GPS in all SRTC vehicles will help us in locating a particular vehicle while transporting government ration from one place to another. The pilferage of ration not only cause loss to state exchequer but also deprive of genuine beneficiaries from their rights.
