Accelerate pace of development in Azad Nagar, Gadigarh: Munish urges admin
Residents seek early redressal of problems
4/7/2020 10:51:14 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Apr 7: Expressing dismay over the lack of civic amenities in Azad Nagar locality of Gadigarh area, the Editor Early Times, Munish Gupta, on Tuesday said that the entire location is presenting a sordid tale of absolute neglect by the people at the helm of affairs.
Munish said that though the local residents are deprived of basic civic amenities but unfortunately the concerned agencies have miserably failed to ensure the provision of such necessities needed for an urban area which raises question mark on the efficacy of ‘Smart City’ concept for Jammu.
Munish, who would be contesting the next Assembly elections from Gandhi Nagar assembly constituency said, “It’s strange that people of this area are still not getting benefits of proper civic amenities for which they are duly entitled. Elementary facilities like proper roads and hygienic surroundings are their right. But such necessities which they should be provided not as a charity but as a duty have become a distant dream for the local residents. The authorities should look into the problems of the inhabitants and try to address all the issues on priority.”
Urging upon the authorities to accelerate the pace of development in Azad Ngr, Munish said that it is high time to correct the mistakes committed in the past due to which the local residents have suffered a lot.
Meanwhile, local residents of Aza Nagar locality near Jammu Airport while talking to Early Times said, “Dilapidated lanes, by-lanes and overall unhygienic conditions are ruling the roost in our area. We demand that problems being faced by us are addressed on priority. Though we repeatedly made requests to the officials, no action has been taken yet.”
Residents said that Azad Nagar locality has not witnessed any noticeable development in comparison to other areas in the city adding that the entire area presents a shabby look as most of the lanes of the colony are in dilapidated condition while the drains are full of silt.
“Several potholes have come up on the inner roads in the colony. During the rainy season the potholes wreak havoc as the rain water gets collected in them. It gets difficult to move around especially for two-wheeler riders and pedestrians but such severe problem has not evoked any response from the concerned authorities,” said the residents.
Several other residents said that they are forced to live in unhygienic conditions as no concrete step is being taken by the civic authorities to maintain proper sanitation in the area.
“Most of the drains are choked and are in a pathetic state. The worst part is the sewage backflow which makes the entire area unhygienic, but despite repeated pleas no action as far as cleansing of drains was taken up so far,” said a local resident. Pointing towards the stagnant water in one of the vacant plots and waste water of households spilling onto the streets, another local said that the accumulation of water in the vacant spaces and lanes is a breeding ground for the insects like mosquitoes and fleas which are source of several diseases.
He said that stagnant water in several locations of the area has become a regular feature of their lives as the drainage system is faulty and needs to be upgraded.
Several locals said that the majority of the lanes has deteriorated as there is sludge and muck all over the place, not to mention the foul odour. “We are living in a locality under city limits but it’s hard to believe that it is nothing less than a hell here,” said locals.
Few others said that there are various spots in the area where heaps of garbage are lying in open particularly along the roadsides, which ultimately falls into the drains causing blockage. “The civic authorities only make assurances to upgrade the amenities and maintain hygiene of the locality, but hardly do anything substantial which could help in improving the general condition of the area,” they added.
