Kashmir Covid hospital invites ‘favorite’ businessman at staff meeting | Doctors, paramedics seek LG’s intervention | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 10: In a shocking development, a Srinagar hospital designated for Covid treatment recently called an official meeting where apart from doctors and officials an “influential businessman” was also invited. Sources said the doctors and others at the meeting where shocked to see the “influential businessman” who also runs a medical store in the vicinity of the hospital being present at the meeting. Sources said while the issue of starting covid facilities was being discussed by doctors, the principal of the institution was “frequently talking to the businessman and seeking his directives.” Sources said need for every item at the hospital was being first diverted towards the businessman. Sources said the said businessman has been in “good relations with the principal for the last over a decade.” “It’s an open secret that two enjoy good relations but brining your aide to an official meeting only suggests of brazen favoritism in times of crises,” said a delegation of officials who attended the meeting. The doctors said it was shocking to attend the official meeting where an outsider was also called. “It has happened for the first time in the history of this hospital that the businessman close to him (Principal) was called in the staff meeting,” the doctors complained. Sources said a day after the meeting, the said businessman allegedly delivered Personal Protective Equipment which were not found of standard quality by the doctors. Sources said on March 30, the officials went on instant strike against the poor quality PPEs. Sources said the resentment from the doctors was so intense that the covid hospital couldn’t start its operations on time but the process had to be delayed. Sources said the protests lasted for at least two days till the government issued orders asking doctors in Kashmir not to make their grievances public. It is pertinent to mention that the principal of the college was already under scanner for shady recruitment of his wife during the then government led by the Peoples Democratic Party. Despite repeated attempts the principal couldn’t be contacted for comments. But a senior official at the hospital said given the pandemic, there was no need of floating tenders for purchases and that direct deals could be done from any businessman. Meanwhile, the hospital doctors and paramedics have appealed Lieutenant Governor GC Mumru to order an inquiry into matter “as to how come outsiders are allowed to attend staff meetings.” |
