Deliver on ground to end miseries of people: Munish urges admin | Not witnessed any considerable development, allege Raipur-Satwari residents | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Apr 12: Editor-in-chief, Early Times, Munish Gupta, on Sunday urged the administration not to take people’s problems for granted and ensure that basic amenities like carpeted roads, better sanitation and proper drainage system are made available to them so as to make their lives more at comfort and ease. Munish, who would be contesting the forthcoming Assembly elections from Gandhi Nagar constituency said, “It’s the responsibility of the government to provide rudimentary facilities to the people but unfortunately the successive regimes have failed to perform their role to perfection so far, as localities like Raipur-Satwari are still deprived of basic civic amenities. I urge the administration to direct its agencies to deliver on ground so that the people’s miseries could be minimized.” He said that the residents of Raipur-Satwari have been forced to live in pitiable conditions as most of the interior roads and by-lanes are damaged while the situation of sanitation is also poor adding that the drainage system in the area is also craving for improvement as most of the drains are choked and muddy. “Certain drastic steps from the administration need to be taken to improve the overall condition of the area. Residents have to be provided with some kind of respite from the problems they are facing due to lethargy of the authorities,” said Munish. Meanwhile, the residents of Raipur-Satwari while talking to Early Times said that their locality is an underdeveloped area, where residents haven’t witnessed any considerable development adding that the condition of the locality is almost same as it was two decades ago. “Our locality has never been on the priority list of any government. Our area never saw any development work. Majority of the inner roads are either completely damaged or half broken. Mud filled drains are part and parcel of our lives. And, hardly any cleanliness drives have ever taken place here, may be because we don’t deserve to live in human conditions,” lament local residents. A resident Satpal says there are several houses in the locality which are not connected with pucca roads. “Believe me; most of the areas in the locality are without carpeted roads. It is a reality, I am not exaggerating. In the rainy season, the stinky water from the clogged drains overflows onto the streets and even enters our houses. It not only ruins our belongings in the house but we also have to wade through waist-deep water to reach out to the main road. Do we really deserve this,” Satpal asks. Satpal was not the lone person who spoke out against civic apathy in the locality. Raipur-Satwari has a substantial population and the problems are almost similar for all. Residents said that the area is plagued with numerous problems including that of unhygienic conditions prevailing in the locality. They emphasized that the concerned authorities need to ensure cleanliness in their area so as to give some credibility to campaigns like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. “Cleanliness is just one issue among several others. Amid dearth of basic infrastructure, it seems pointless talking about cleanliness in the locality. Even Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has failed to inspire the authorities to maintain hygiene in our area. Presently, the drains in our area are completely choked as most of these are filled with mud and waste material. Moreover, thick layer of bushes and weeds have also grown in and alongside drains which need to be removed to ensure smooth flow of drain water,” another resident, Raju said. However, people like Raju still have high hopes from the government. “We believe that a day will come when the government starts acting on its own and initiates necessary works for the betterment of the locality,” he said. The garbage dumps on roadsides is also a major cause of concern for several locals, who said that dumping of waste in open is creating a mess in the locality as the waste material gets scattered on roads. “The garbage dumps have made our life hellish. It is not only affecting our health, but also our relations as people don’t feel like coming to our homes due to the filthy environment. Garbage is dumped in such a way that it covers almost half the width of the road, leaving hardly any space for commuters,” said the residents. |
