In power and in opposition, Omar plays different tunes | As CM termed Durbar Move a wasteful expenditure, now criticizes LG’s new arrangement | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 12: True to the picture of politicians portrayed in Bollywood movies, where they change colours frequently, former J&K Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, is also found playing different tunes while enjoying power and when in opposition. The J&K Union Territory Administration on Friday ordered the opening of annual Durbar Move offices in Srinagar on May 4 and ordered the employees to work on “as is where is’’ basis. According to the order issued by GAD the Valley based employees would move to the Valley this year while employees of Jammu division would serve in such offices as on “as is where is basis”, which means they would not move to Srinagar and the arrangement would be reviewed after June 15, accessing the spread of COVID-19. However the unique order didn’t go down well with the former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who described the order as “mindless rubbish.” Venting his anger on twitter, Omar said, “This order regarding the bi-annual durbar move is just mindless rubbish at works and needless tokenism at best. So the offices can’t shift to Srinagar because of COVID-19, I get that. What I don’t get is what Srinagar secretariat will do without files or senior officers?” He went on to add that the order of two functioning secretariats will just create confusion because no one will know which secretariat to approach to get their work done. It would be better to withdraw the order and just delay the move offices till the COVID-19 threat has passed”. This new version of Omar Abdullah in 2020 is quite contrary to his previous version in the year 2012, when he was heading the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir as Chief Minister. In April 2012, Omar Abdullah had questioned the annual Durbar move exercise and had said, “Do I think the ‘Durbar move’ is a waste of money? Yes I do. Is there an alternative? I haven’t seen a viable alternative suggested”. He went on to tweet in 2012, “We run away when people need us most and (they) face difficulty. The Durbar move is escapist”. Omar Abdullah had also advocated for South African model of capitals for Jammu and Kashmir. He is reported as tweeted, “I have often talked about examining the South African model but consensus is impossible to find,” he wrote on micro blogging site twitter. Moreover it is not only the Omar Abdullah but his father Farooq Abdullah had decided to have only Srinagar as “all weather capital” in October 1987 but he had to face massive agitation in Jammu, forcing him to abandon the idea. Instead of appreciating the idea of making government functional from both the regions, Omar Abdullah has been openly criticized the UT administration, despite the fact that the GAD order has made it clear the Administrative Secretaries would make necessary arrangements to ensure the functionality in their respective departments, both at Srinagar and Jammu. “If the government is trying to make functional the offices from both the regions, what is the problem it will benefit the people of both the regions. Even during the lockdown the government should be at the doorsteps and the order of LG’s administration is in this direction”, a civil secretariat employee said, adding that the politics should be in favour of the people and not in a way to criticize the government when in opposition and trying to justify every action, when in power. |
