'Don't indulge in publicity stunts amidst pandemic' | Govt bans photography, videography while helping needy | | Early Times Report jammu, Apr 15: Tightening noose around the people who were offering assistance to needy people only to grab the media attention, the government has banned the photography/videography while offering food or assistance to needy people along with circulation of same on social networking sites. Since the COVID-19 lockdown, several volunteers have been helping the people in distress but a large number were found publicity hungry. Everyday photographs and videos of the volunteers as well as some politicians were uploaded on the social media sites to grab the public attention. From the uploading of the activities, these activities were found to be mostly for publicity and less for actual cause. The Deputy Commissioners of various districts have issued the orders banning the circulation of such videos as well as photographs. One such paragraph in such circular reads, "There shall be no photography of (the distribution of food items or other necessary items to the people in distress) or circulation on the social media about such food items either by the government agency or Non Government Organizations. However photographs may be kept for record/audit purpose where required as supporting document or otherwise." Secretary department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer affairs, Simrandeep Singh, who is nodal officer for overall coordination of essential supplies and logistic chains beside other works, in response to a message said that similar type of circular (restricting the photography/videography during distribution and circulation on social media platforms) has been issued by Deputy Commissioner Jammu and Srinagar. However, despite issuance of orders, some individuals and politicians, as reported by Early Times, have been uploading their photographs/videos about their philanthropy works, which are mostly aimed at securing publicity. "Even in religions including Hinduism there is a method of giving alms without giving the name, which is called "Gupt Daan". It is considered that if a giver/philanthropist try to take credit for "Daan" it is not accepted but sidelining such morals, people have been trying to gain publicity by their efforts", an elder said. |
