COVID-19: Frontline staff at SMGS Hospital most vulnerable to catch infection | | | Early Times Report jammu, Apr 15: The frontline staff including doctors, nurses, safai karamcharis beside others, deputed at Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) Hospital here at Shalamar Road, are the most vulnerable to catch infection in view of increasing number of cases and direct referral of patients to the hospital. Few days back a pregnant woman was found positive at SMGS Hospital after which over 15 doctors were sent on quarantine but still the vulnerability of the frontline staff has been intact. The doctors performing their duties at SMGS Hospital have alleged vulnerability of the frontline staff to catch infection in view of establishment of a ward to keep suspected COVID-19 patients. According to a press note issued by the doctors, it has been claimed that as per the precautionary advisories to be followed in the hospitals, there should be a separate isolated ward, separate staff, separate entry and exit for the building. "Though GMC&H and Gandhi Nagar hospital have been exclusively marked for COVID-19 suspects but a separate ward has also been earmarked for suspects with some symptoms," the doctors informed. The establishment of a ward (Septic) ward for COVID-19 suspects at SMGS Hospital has increased the vulnerability of entire hospital staff. "The Septic ward is just opposite to the Labour Room, while there is minimum or no level of separation practiced by doctors beside the entry and exist for the Labour Room as well as Septic ward is also same. In such a scenario the danger of cross-contamination increases manifolds", the doctors have alleged in the press release. It is further alleged that all the doctors have not been given the PPE kits. "Most of the referred patients as well as some other emergency cases have been coming to the SMGS Hospital and the doctors there have to respond to the emergency. But any of the patient could be a COVID-19 suspect, so to treat these patients, the doctors should be given the PPE kits but such kits are not provided to all the doctors, once again increasing their vulnerability," the doctors have alleged. Deputy Medical Superintendent of SMGS Hospital, Dr Rakesh Sharma said that emergency cases have been referred to SMGS Hospital and the primary duty of the doctors was to treat the patients. "In view of the referral of the cases to SMGS Hospital, any patient can have the symptoms but the doctors have to treat them at any cost. Those patients with the symptoms have been kept in a separate ward, which is around 20 meters from the Labour room," Dr Sharma said, adding that the samples of the patients with symptoms have been taken and send for check-up and if someone was found positive, same was shifted to Gandhi Nagar or GMC Hospital. He further said that the referral hospitals should take utmost precautions while referring the cases to the premier hospitals in Jammu. |
