Online fraud in offing: Fraudsters use Professor's identity to cheat | Created email with HoD's name, sent messages to several students, faculty members | | Early Times Report jammu, Apr 21: Amid COVID-19 lockdown, majority of people have been confined to their homes, spending time surfing the internet but online fraudsters have also been using the opportunity to target the people with their cheating tricks. One such online fraud case came to fore on Tuesday, when the fraudsters using the identity of a Professor of Central University of Jammu sent an email (phishing email) to several post graduate pass out students as well as faculty members of a department. The post graduate students, who had left the University in the year 2016, 2017 and some faculty members, had received an email on the name of Head of the Department. The fraudsters have not used the actual email address of the Head of the Department but created a new email address, using the identity of the Head as well as his name and designation. The email sent to the students by the name of the Professor reads, "Sub: Request. When you get a minute, Could you please drop an email. Best Regards (name of the professor). As the students and the other faculty members got the suspicious email, as it was something abnormal on part of the Professor, who is always available for all the students as well as faculty members on phone and entertain all the phone calls. The students as well as faculty members started making phone calls to the Professor, who in turn made them clear that it was not sent by him or from his genuine email address. Several faculty members as well as students marked the email as phishing activity but it was still unclear, how many of the students have already replied to the email and what happened later. It has come to fore that the fraudsters have taken the email account addresses of all the passed out students either from the website of the University or which could also be available online. A police officer in the Cyber Cell Jammu informed that such email frauds have been going on since long but the users should never reply to such emails or even if the user responded but never-ever share any type of passwords or OTP on such emails. |
